I really have my heart set on the Xterra and would like advice as far as what car seat for a 3 year old and two booster seats for 6 and 9 year olds would work best in the back seat of the Xterra. I appreciate your advice. You can fit quite a bit in an Xterra. I've fit 3 in a row with one of them being a Regent. That being said, we would need to know the height and weights of your children to offer more specific advice. Some general information though. Backless boosters in the Xterra won't last you very long.
A child in a backless booster must have the vehicle seatback, or the vehicle head restraint at least as tall as the top of their ears in order to prevent whiplash. The Xterra doesn't have head restraints, and many children are too tall for a backless in it around age 7. You'll want to look at high back boosters for that reason. I also want to point out that the Century Next Step car seat you mention for your other car is almost certainly expired.
They only have a six year life span and the last ones were made in Post back with the sizes of your children and we'll give you some seat choices to consider. Oh, and enjoy the Xterra. I really enjoyed the one I had. Thing has the guts to get you through the roughest terrain. I have a Pathfinder Go Nissan Anyways, I currently have 3 across in the 2nd row, and I'm pretty sure it's the same size. My best advice is play with them. I was shocked when I could get 3 across with the MA behind the passenger seat, but not behind the drivers seat.
You may just have to flip things around a bit. Hmmmmm, I owned an Xterra for many years and found the backseat to be very narrow. I had 2 kids in Marathons and there was not even room for a small kid in between them. That said, more narrow seats would likely work for you. How heavy is your 3 year old? Can you measure her torso? Sit her against a wall, mark the top of her shoudlers and measure from the mark to the floor.
I would look at the SK Radian for your 3 year old. It is a very narrow seat and would help you achieve the 3 across. If your 3 year old is a lightweight and well below 40 lbs you could also consider the Evenflo Chase. It's very narrow. The seat you have is very likely expired and really should be replaced. For your older kiddos, I'd look into getting them hbb if there are no headrests. The 6 year old would fit in the FP booster which is very narrow.
They have been discontinued so are hard to find, though. I think with a Radian, though you would have more room for a less thin booster. I appreciate everyone for posting feedback - here is some additional information: 3 yr old girl is 39'" tall, 33 lbs 6 yr old boy is 49" tall, 55 lbs 9 yr old boy is 53" tall, 60 lbs I really like the Xterra, but my wife is concerned about the very narrow seat especially for when the kids get bigger.
Our main car for the kids is the Honda Odyssey, while I use my car currently an Isuzu Rodeo every once in a while to haul the kids around. For me, I would be using the Xterra primarily for commuting to work and towing our boat periodically. The wife is looking more at the Honda Pilot more of late because you can fit just about any car seat or booster in that vehicle.
