It was designed by Howard M. Jones, the chief engineer of the Nashville, Chattanooga, and St. Louis Railway, and was the first in North America supported by arched concrete piers. The pedestrian route begins on the west at Third Avenue South, slowly rising above three city blocks before crossing the river. After reaching the west bank, the walkway gradually descends over Cumberland Park, eventually meeting four square platforms each planted with medium-sized trees arranged in a stair-step fashion to reach the plaza below.
Placed at intervals and marking the approach to the bridge on each side are square brick pavers with white diamond patterns. With its steel trusses now painted white, and its concrete surface enlivened by triangular patterns alternating between red and light-colored pavement, the bridge has a fifteen-foot-wide central bike lane that is flanked on either side by ten-foot-wide, elevated sidewalks. Oval-shaped concrete seats are placed intermittently along the sidewalks, which open to four overlooks two on each side, directly above the concrete piers that provide panoramic views of Nashville to the north and south.
After a long history of needing repairs, Tennessee state inspectors declared in that the bridge was in too poor a condition for vehicular traffic. The structure thus became the John Seigenthaler Pedestrian Bridge and was refurbished for its new use. Today, the bridge features ramps, elevators, a bike path, a dramatic lighting system, and spectacular views of the Music City skyline. Park downtown, then traverse the 3,foot long bridge into East Nashville! The best part?
Taking a stroll here is also one of the best free things to do in Nashville! This bridge is a local favorite for photography, picnics, romantic strolls into the city, and friendly hangouts among friends. In recent years, the bridge was renovated to include an elevator, ramps, and stairs.
The center of the bridge is a foot bike path, so cyclists and foot traffic can enjoy their own pace. If you take a stroll across the bridge, be sure to bring along a camera and a snack, so you can stick around for a while and enjoy the views while you walk.
